Perfido-Humbert Duo 10/28/26 Best Video

Billed as a French jazz duo had Peter Perfido on drums and Dominique Humbert on alto and soprano sax.  When Dominique spoke, we can tell he’s French. Peter, though, had no accent. A little googling shows that Peter was born in Hartford in the late 50s but has lived in France for the past 40 years. Dominique looks to be in his 40s and deferred to the elder drummer. They start with some improv to get the set moving. European jazz has a distinct feel, it’s hard to describe but the touches are lighter. Dominique toggled from alto to soprano with ease, his confident tone was on full display. Looking at Peter’s CV, we see he has shared the stage with the likes of Anthony Braxton and Chet Baker. Peter is a master percussionist and uses a variety of shakers, cymbals, and bowls to augment his kit. Peter used brushes, mallets, sticks and other ephemera to extract the sound. They play a couple of Monk tunes Friday the 13th and Played Twice. They play some tunes by obscure European composer friends, a German trombonist, a Parisian guitarist. It’s no coincidence that the music I hear in this video store has a cinematic quality, this jazz veered toward soundtrack material. They ask the crowd for “ requests”, someone asks for Ornette’s Lonely Woman, the play a great version of Happy House. Excellent show from some musicians that are completely unknown to me.
